Blizzard Bag 2 - Biology

GO TO GOOGLE CLASSROOM!!!!  IGNORE WHAT IS WRITTEN BELOW!!!!

A big part of why science teachers do what they do is because we want you to be informed citizens.  Not too long from now you will be asked to vote on things like environmental policy, biotechnology, and medicine, among other things.  These Blizzard bags are focused on current issues and research - they are to get you thinking about what is going on out there and hopefully getting you excited about them.  Enjoy!

FOR ALL BIOLOGY STUDENTS!!!!!

Your assignment is to learn about where we've been and where we expect to go.  Here's what you've got to do:

(1) Watch the TED Talk below with Juan Enriquez
(2) Address one of the reflection questions I've got listed below in a a blog post on this blog.
(3) Respond to a post by one of your classmates--keep it respectful, academic, and professional.  Do you agree with what they said?  Do you disagree?  Did their post get you to think more?  And your response must be thoughtful--not just 'I agree'.
(4) Repeat the process for the TED Talk with Martin Hanczyc

In Sum:

  • Watch both talks
  • Have two of your own posts (one per video)
  • Respond to two posts by your peers (one per video)
Get Thinking!

TED Talk 1:Juan Enriquez: Will our kids be a different species?

If the video above doesn't play you can view it on the TED website at http://www.ted.com/talks/juan_enriquez_will_our_kids_be_a_different_species.html

Follow-up questions--address one in a post:
  • Which theory would you have adhered to prior to this video – theory 1 or theory 2?  Did he change your mind as you watched the video?
  • What do you think of his discussion of how we’ve misused the science regarding genetics to date?  Do you think this will impact how we approach genetics both in the scientific realm or as a society?  Consider his Olympics example with the 3 options...
  • Do you find any problems with the stem cell research he discussed regarding skin cells?
  • What sorts of moral or ethical issues do you think could arise from some of the research discussed?
  • Which theory of the four behind ‘rapid brain evolution’ do you think is most likely?  Why?

TED Talk 2:Martin Hanczyc: The line between life and not-life

If the video doesn't play you can view it on the TED website at
Follow-up questions--address one in a post:
  • How do the characteristics of life presented by Hanczyc differ from those we discussed in class?  Did his make sense?
  • Describe your reactions on seeing the protocells.
  • How do you think the work with protocells could impact what we know regarding the origins of life?
  • How do you think the work with protocells could impact future research?
